URTU Learning One Day Workshop


The URTU Learning Project recently hosted a successful one day workshop around the role of the Union Learning Representative (ULR). This role is vital in promoting education and lifelong learning in the workplace and the wider community.

The aim of the day was to raise awareness of the ULR role and provide delegates with the information and resources they would need to be able to start undertaking the role in their workplace. 

Simon Walker, who is a TUC Tutor delivered the ULR course on behalf of the URTU Learning Project. Simon started the day by finding out about the delegates learning history and what they would like to achieve for themselves through learning. He went on to explain the role of the ULR and why it plays an equally important role within the workplace as the other lay representatives positions. such as Shop Stewards and Health & Safety Representatives. 

ULR's play a beneficial role in raising awareness of the importance of training and learning. When people receive the right training and learning support this can reduce the number of disciplinary as well as increasing productivity within the workplace.

ULRs also help increase membership of the union through supporting the more under-represented and disadvantaged groups within the workplace. This is achieved through promoting the key values of learning, such as the equality of opportunity, as well as embedding learning in the workplace. 

The afternoon session was started with a fun quiz around lifelong learning where prizes were given out to the delegates who correctly answered all the questions. 

Simon then taught delegates how they can go about organising learning within their workplace and gave them the resources they need to undertake this.  Simon went on to explain that the role of the ULR is fully supported by the URTU Learning Project Team and that we will be on hand to guide and offer any support needed to both ULR and learners.

Simon ended the day by getting delegates to create action plans of what training and learning they would like to achieve in their workplaces.

Simon commented; "It was great to see so many members interested in the role of the ULR and keen to explore the learning opportunities available for the membership and their families. To better understand the role of the ULR and its increasing importance in the modern workplace, it was also good to see the workshop being supported by the project team and the acting general secretary. The feedback from delegates was extremely positive it was informative interesting and fun, and hopefully is the start of many more workshops to come."

The workshop received positive feedback from all delegates, and enable them to understand the role better without having to commit to a full weeks training.   This can be hard to arrange around work and peoples personal commitments.

One delegate said; "thank you all for arranging this, we had been looking for courses to do with ULR's but couldn't find anything. The workshop has met my aims, and we will now ask for a learning committee to be established in the business and decisions coming from this will look less like the word of one person, which is how it has been previously".
