URTU members to take strike action at Kammac plc
2/12/2011
United Road Transport Union members will be taking strike action at Kammac plc, Skelmersdale from Saturday 10 December 2011.
The URTU members' action comes after the company served its drivers with notice of its intention to vary their contracts of employment. Currently drivers are paid for their statutory forty five minute break and, following the variation of contract, the company intend to deduct one forty five minute break per shift.
Saturdays action will commence at 12.00 midday and will be continuous.
URTU Regional Officer, Lee Pimbley, said;
"URTU members' understand the seriousness of taking industrial strike action and the decision to strike is not taken lightly, especially so close to Christmas. Unfortunately they feel they have no alternative. Class 1 LGV drivers employed at Kammac are some of the lowest paid drivers in the industry and, if the company proposal goes ahead, it will mean a drop in earnings for a driver working a normal five day shift from Mon - Fri of over £25 per week. The same drivers have not received any pay increase for over three years and the proposed reduction in earnings comes at a time when high inflation rates continue to cripple household budgets.
"As a union we have engaged in discussions with the employer to find resolution to this matter, but unfortunately, those discussions have not yielded agreement and our members now feel they have no alternative other than to strike. As ever, in these difficult situations, if the company wish to enter into meaningful discussions to resolve this matter, union officials are available to meet at any time".
