For the road ahead

Digital Heroes Talk Talk Award

25/10/2011

Good news! Your Union has nominated long time supporter, Mags McGuire, from Corby for the Digital Heroes Talk Talk Award. Mags has previously worked for URTU on the learning agenda as a project worker. She supported URTU members in accessing Skills for Life, Driver CPC and using computers.

While working within a support role and encouraging all to continue to get educated, Mags carried on in her role for Corby Voluntary and Community Service (CVCS), but maintains her strong link to supporting URTU within education. The CVCS now works in an educational partnership with URTU in promoting learning in the community, iIncluding URTU members having the use of a joint learning centre at CVCS Corby, Northants.

As a digital champion in Corby, Mags is currently promoting the Digital Activist Inclusion Network (DAIN) project. The project works with a number of charities, the Workers Education Association and local communities to promote the use of digital technology as a way of connecting with excluded groups, such as older people and those with learning difficulties.

Mags left school with no formal qualifications but her thirst for knowledge has led her to take up a wide range of learning opportunities culminating in a Foundation Degree in Managing, Voluntary and Community Organisations. She is an enthusiastic tutor, mentor and a keen advocate of the lifelong learning agenda. Mark Rowe, URTU Project Manager, and the project team believe Mags is a worthy Digital Hero: "Mags tireless efforts have brought many people into contact with digital technology and she continues to work with a wide range of organisations to ensure those that need help can get help."

She has been nominated by the URTU project team (Graham Cooper and Barry Marks) with the support of Mark Rowe. Her support for URTU has been a tremendous help to members and we believe she deserves this award for that alone.

Members can do their bit by going on line and voting for her. Visit http://www.talktalk.co.uk/digitalheroes/vote-map.php, click on the East Midlands part of the map and VOTE for Mags.
