Tolpuddle Commemorative Lecture Tickets - 19 July

12/7/2010

The Union has a number of free tickets available for the Annual Tolpuddle Commemorative Lecture 2010, which takes place at the House of Commons on the 19 July.

The Lectures are organised by the The Trade Union Co-ordinating Group which is made up of eight national unions (including URTU), who together represent over half a million workers.

The Lectures bring the remembrance of the Tolpuddle Martyrs into a modern setting by relating this historic struggle with our contemporary campaigns for trade union freedom.

This year, the Lectures will be focussing on John McDonnell MP's Private Members' Bill "Lawful Industrial Action (Minor Errors) Bill" to tackle the increasing practice by employers of using minor technical errors in the balloting process - which have no material affect on the outcome - to take unions to court in order to prevent them from taking industrial action. If adopted this measure would significantly improve unions' ability to defend their members and would be the first step towards the full restoration of trade union rights. Speakers include Bob Crow (RMT), Maria Exall (CWU NEC, pc), John Hendy QC, Duncan Holley (BASSA branch secretary), and John McDonnell MP.

The Lectures take place from 7 - 9pm in the Grimmond Room, Portcullis House, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA. For free tickets, call James Bower on 0161 486 2103.
