URTU Legal Helpline

We have received occasional calls from members which indicate that they are unfamiliar with how the Legal Helpline operates.

As described in your Union's Diary, The Legal Helpline " you and members of your immediate family access to professional legal advice".

The Legal Helpline is intended primarily as an ‘advice' line. Most calls can be dealt with quickly, with no further advice required. However, there may sometimes be a point at which ‘free advice' has progressed as far as it reasonably can. In such circumstances, ‘representation' may be the only remaining solution. At this stage, representation is a matter for discussion between the member and the legal firm. If this is the case, you should always ask for the discounted rate available for members of your Union.

There is some legal advice which is not covered by the Legal Helpline. This is because your Union offers separate and specific benefits in those areas of the law. These Union Benefits cover ‘Personal Injury', ‘Employment/Work Related' Advice and the ‘Benevolent Fund'. If you are at all unsure which Union Benefit best covers your situation, please contact your Union's Head Office on 0161 486 2100, or your Regional Officer. We will be happy to point you in the right direction.

Finally, if you have used the legal helpline (or indeed any of your Union's legal benefits), please give us some feedback - both ‘good' and ‘bad'. That way we can continue to offer the best service to Members.
